Vacation Time - Closed July 15 - August 2

I've been neglecting the blog somewhat for a variety of reasons. The most serious, perhaps, was an auto accident that took put me out of action for a bit. We are heading to Florida for some R&R and will reopen on August 2. Meanwhile, here are a few items that we've taken in over the past few weeks.

Campell's Soup collectible porcelain with original "soup can" packaging.

Hammered metal purse with inset stones, made in India.

Brand new with tags attached, Tommy Hilfiger handbag.

Heavy brass doorknocker is one of several in stock, from Michael Healy Designs. These retail for $150 and up. Our price is $75.

We have a variety of pottery from both the American Southwest as well as Scandanavia. This piece is an oil lamp. Simply pull the wicks up through the stems and light it up!

Finally, a pair of Syroco bookends. Made of a material that resembles carved wood, Syroco was popular in the 1930s. Although these are probably not vintage, they will bring a distinguished look to your den or library.

Please stop in at A Beautiful Find after August 2nd to see these and many more interesting items for the home.

King George III is in da house!

You may remember this chair from our post in April. Well our research is complete and we finally know what these are...and what they aren't. After lots of eyestraining hours looking at hundreds and hundreds of chair photos, we have determined that these are reproductions of  King George III Gothic Windsor Armchairs. (At no time did we ever expect them to be originals from the 1700s). We knew from the start that they were repros, but wanted to know precisely where they were made and what they are worth.

Our search took us to England and Batheaston Cabinetmakers Ltd., of North Yorkshire. After examining our photos, they confirmed that they are indeed Batheaston Gothic Windsor armchairs, item BC17 in their catalouge, and are the flagship of their chair collection. The chairs are primarily made of Ash wood, with Beech cabriole front legs and carved Beech splats.

Had these chairs been originals from the 1700's, their value would have been in the tens of thousands of dollars. Southeby's sold a pair of the originals in 2006 for over $20,000. Our chairs, although reproductions, still command a rather stiff price. Batheaston still makes and sells these chairs at retail for 1210 British pounds, which equivocates to $1925.00 in U.S. dollars! Yes, to buy these chairs new will cost almost two thousand dollars per chair, or twelve thousand for the set of six!

Our chairs were purchased by the consignor's parents approximately 25 - 30 years ago. They have been well cared for, but they are in used condition. Our price for the set of six chairs is $3600.00. We will, however, consider reasonable offers.

While this type of item may not be for everybody, we are putting it out there in hopes of attracting a buyer with discriminating taste. If you wish to view the chairs in person, we have two on display at the shop.

A Touch of India

Just in today is an assortment of jewelry or trinket boxes and purses made in India. Since I know very little about this, I'll let the pictures do most of the talking. (Click on each photo to enlarge)

The little horse at the right might have been a childs toy, or just a decorative piece. He does have a latch and is supposed to slide open, but age has taken its toll so we don't want to force it. Open or closed, it's a pretty neat little item.

This beautifully decorated square box features a peacock design on top. Bright and cheerful, it makes a nice storage box for jewelry.

Pictured on the right is an older jewelry box with velvet covered interior and a small mirror under the lid.

This octagonal wooden box shows some age and was used by its owner for potpourri. We've emptied it out. Makes a nice decoration, even if you don't put anything inside.

Not a box, but this small footed platform is great for displaying your perfume bottles on your dresser or vanity.

These purses are all handmade in India and have very little use on them. Great for Mom or daughter!

Let There Be Lamps

The shop is a lot brighter, even on cloudy days like today, thanks to a growing number of lamps consigned to us. Here are a few for your consideration. At left is a fairly rare Aynsley Pembroke Fine China table lamp made in England. The Pembroke pattern was Aynsley's most popular pattern in their dinnerware. These lamps are out of production and quite hard to find. A quick web search turned up a few...but they were all in Europe. According to the consignor, this lamp (and the one at the right) are about 30 years old. The lamp at right is also an Aynsley Pembroke, but is slightly larger, with a different base.
The two lamps at left are also from Europe and date back to the 1950s. Both are made of brass, and should polish up nicely. The red shades exhibit some wear considering their age. These two will need to have the plugs replaced as the original European plugs are still attached.

Cute little table top lamp with a stained glass shade and a candleabra bulb gives off a wonderful array of colors when lit. Despite its delicate appearance, this lamp has a heavy, solid metal base.

Pictured to the left is one of a pair of Oriental style jar lamps. These tall table lamps feature an ivory color body with a raised pattern of delicate flowers. They are supported by a gold metal base. At first glance, they appear to be Lenox, but we were not able to determine the maker.

Finally, we have this adorable, vintage ceramic girl lamp. Standing only about 15 inches tall, this cutie will brighten any little girl's room.

April News & Additions

Hard to believe I let a month slip by without a post, but then again, when you're in Florida, you tend to let things slide.

First, let's get to the big news at A Beautiful Find. We are now accepting credit cards using the Square Card Reader. There are a few restrictions, as follows:
1. There is a $10 minimum purchase for credit card purchases.
2. Sale or discounted items will be assessed a 2.5% surcharge when purchased with a credit card.
3. Since the Square Card Reader only works on my phone, we can only accept credit cards when I am
personally present in the store. We are looking at a work-around that will allow us to accept cards
full time without incurring the cost of another data plan.

We finally have our sidewalk sign in place out on Bloomfield Avenue. This already is paying dividends as it is driving more customers down the walkway to our shop in the back.

Now for a few new items in the store this month:

We are currently researching the origin and value of these amazing Gothic Windsor dining chairs. We have two in the shop
and four more offsite. Once we establish a value, we will be offering them for sale. What we know so far is that they were made in England and were a special order item.

This vintage camphor wood trunk.is ideal for storage, it also would make a great coffee table. Add a glass top or leave it as is.

Give Mom a fabulous bouquet of flowers for Mother's Day and put them in this incredible crystal vase. Over 10 inches tall, 8 inches wide, it weighs over 7 pounds!

We have a pair of beautifully framed paintings, each depicting a Venice scene. They are priced individually at $45.

Lastly a pair of framed oriental prints on silk. each measures about 3 feet tall.

Stieff Pewter: The Williamsburg Restoration Pieces

The Art of the Pewterer reached its height during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. From the many fine examples of eighteenth century Pewterer's Work which are displayed in the Exhibition Buildings of Colonial Williamsburg, a number of outstanding pieces were been selected for reproduction. These Reproductions were manufactured by the skilled craftsmen of The Stieff Company and proudly bear the hallmark of Williamsburg Restoration, Incorporated. Pewter was in use throughout the American Colonies, and its use was by no means confined to the poorer classes. Records indicate that the aristocratic planters and even the royal governors made use of fine pewter pieces in their households. Fashionable taverns like the Raliegh prided themselves on their excellent pewter service.

The ATC Mark: ATC was the mark of the American Pewter Guild. The guild was founded in 1958. The ATC mark is to pewter what Sterling is to silver. Made of tin, antimony and copper, fine pewter contains NO LEAD. Pieces made prior to 1958 will not carry the ATC mark.
A Beautiful Find is proud to present a collection of Williamsburg pieces by Stieff Pewter. The company was purchased by Lenox, and more recently by Department 56, and the association with Colonial Williamsburg has been severed. These pieces are no longer in production.

Pictured in order from the top are a pair of Chambersticks. each features a push-up mechanism to release the candle or old wax from the holder.
Looking like a big salt shaker, the Muffineer was used in colonial times to sprinkle powdered sugar on muffins and scones. It stands 7" tall.

To the right are a pair of salt bowls with salt spoons.

Of the 3 cups pictured, the larger is called a Jigger and the smaller are Cordial cups.

At left is a Porringer, for serving porridge.

Below that is a Sugar scoop.

The tall coffeepot is the only piece not marked Williamsburg. This pot carries the ATC mark mentioned above.

And finally, a beautiful 3 piece coffee/tea set with Rosewood handles.

You can click on the photos to enlarge for a closer look.
Be sure to visit the shop to view these classic pewter pieces in person.
